About Chelsea's Ippodo Gallery

Opening in Tokyo in 1996, the Ippodo Gallery has three exhibition venues in Japan where it has established a reputation for itself as the leading gallery specializing in contemporary art crafts.
In 2008 Ippodo Gallery opened its first U.S. branch in the Chelsea neighborhood of New York, where it holds diverse exhibitions and events, presenting the work of contemporary Japanese craft artists in an effort to introduce current Japanese culture to the world.
At Ippodo Gallery we collect beautiful works, in ceramics, urushi lacquer, bamboo, textiles (dyed and embroidered), cabinetmaking, paper, metal, glass, stone (sculpture) etc., embodying the highest degree of craftsmanship, in order to promote and champion Japanese art crafts.

What is Po-An?

Chelsea's Ippodo Gallery Po-An

Po'An ippodo gallery intimate Japanese salon, is both a traditional tea space and modern shop. The showroom of Japanese crafts in earthenware, poecelain, lacquer, glass and wearable artare carefully selected with an eye for craftsmanship, the smallest details, and that certain something special that makes earch item a novelty.

With its blue walls and interior designed by renowned Japanese designer Shigeru Uchida, Po'An showcases the best Japanese craft design in a space that is work of art in itself.

The Po'An Tea Room, is a venue for traditional Japanese tea ceremonies. Visitors can enjoy a selection of tea utencils designed by leading Japanese artisans to fit today's modern lifestyle.
