Yokoyama’s introduction to ceramics was his casual decision to join the University Pottery Club. After graduation he entered the Tajimi City Pottery Design and Technical Center, which he successfully graduated in 2000. Thereafter, he works as a freelance artist.
The artist talks about a fascination with the “clumps” that occur in nature. When he is making a piece, he is very much aware of “a clump of clay.” When it comes to selecting materials or deciding which technique(s) to use, the artist is conscious of the flower bloom or a meal being presented on that clump of clay and of the various moods that the clay displays. Fired dark clay with a coating of white slip creates a characteristic texture where the black faintly shows through the fine cracks in the white over-glaze.
