Yatagarasu is a spirit bird that is an incarnation of the sun and is said to take its shape from sunspots. In mythology, it guided the first Emperor, Jimmu, and his followers through the mountains of Kumano when they were lost. It is still venerated at various shrines in the Kumano district.
