In the days when the Indus Valley Civilization flourished, the area surrounding the river was covered in thick forest. People cleared the land for fields, using the wood to fire bricks to build their cities. However, the eventual disappearance of the forest caused the civilization to collapse. The origin of the Shinrabansho motif is said to be the ‘Alas Alasan’ design which means ‘forest’. The forest is the source of all life and the citadel of the soul. The people of Java who created this motif filled it with their feelings towards the forest to produce beautiful chintz fabrics. This work glorifies all life.
