The development of blue-and-white ware in 1351 was to open up new possibilities in the ceramics world. Suddenly there was a trend to take what had previously been looked down upon as mere decoration and raise it to the level of true art. The imperial artists of the Southern Song dynasty began to decorate pottery and porcelain with the ‘fish and aquatic plants’ motif that was their speciality. This work continues this tradition, using the ultimate blue-and-white technique to produce a ‘fish and aquatic plants’ motif unlike anything produced previously.
