* Public Collections
Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York); National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa
Born into a family of renowned ceramic artists in the ancient city of Kanazawa, from the 1990s Kohei NAKAMURA began to create highly decorative objects.
He expressed the unease inherent in modern society through a series of abstract, three-dimensional objects that he exhibited in New York, creating a sensation in the contemporary art world.
These works were acquired for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and he became a popular contemporary artist.
Upon his return to Japan, his work underwent a total reversal as he started to focus on the recreation of classic tea bowls, resulting in him producing numerous exquisite K?rai and Raku style bowls.
Sixteen years passed, then last year he took part in 'Art Crafting Towards the Future' exhibition
at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, with a work entitled 'Rules of Form',
which consisted of a combination of five thousand individual pieces of gold ceramics.
However, no sooner had he finished setting up this exhibit than he exclaimed,
'Now, let's make some tea bowls!' and began working his clay.
Although he had originally concentrated on the reproduction of classic tea bowls,
he gradually broke away from the restrictions imposed by the tea ceremony to produce unique and powerful forms of his own.
Combining skilled and refined technique with great talent, Kohei NAKAMURA's latest challenge has only just begun.

Toshio Tokunaga
Chairs hand carved by master woodworker, using Tamahagane steel; the same steel used to create traditional Japanese swords
"If it were not for my encounter with the blacksmith, Mr. OHARA, in 2008, these new chairs would never have come into being. The plane that he brought was completely different to anything I had ever used before.
He had collected iron sand from which he smelted the same kind of steel as is used in Japanese swords, then forged this to produce an incredibly sharp plane.
'I can use this plane to create chairs!' It was as if I had received a divine revelation. The technique of using a plane to apply the finish to my work provided the initial motivation, the inherent beauty of wood furnishing the answers by which I could overcome numerous problems.
The result is I now make chairs."

We are excited to introduce our new exhibition at Ginza Ippodo Gallery, featuring the work of Kai Tsujimura.
The exhibition date: May 23 - June 2 in Tokyo.
Ginza Ippodo Gallery : 1-8-17, Isei bidg. Chuo-ku, Ginza, Tokyo 104-0061 Japan
Kai Tsujimura is the second son of Shiro Tsujimura, and was born in 1976.
He produces pots in a wide range of styles, including Iga, Karatsu, Bizen, Shino, Kohiki and Shigaraki, mastering traditional styles in a way that is quite remarkable for somebody so young.
Living in the mountains of Nara Prefecture, he devotes himself daily to his creativity.
His painstakingly made tea bowls and vases, small pots and containers, all epitomize the concept of 'functional beauty'.
They explore the subdued, simple refinement which defines Japanese aesthetics.
He also produces large pots embodying the power of his youth; one of which was acquired and made part of the permanent collection of the Minneapolis Institute of Arts in 2010.
In this exhibition, we will feature his newest work, Hikidashi-guro chawan, for the first time. Please come visit our gallery Ippodo in Ginza, Tokyo. The artist will be present during the exhibition.

1/21/2013 : A Greeting from the Director
Dear Friends of Ippodo,
On December 31, 2012, Ippodo Gallery New York closed its Chelsea gallery,
and has since relocated to the Upper East Side with a fresh start.
Ippodo Gallery New York opened in Chelsea on March 12, 2008,
with the vision that we could share the highest quality contemporary Japanese art-crafts,
by bringing them to New York, and from New York as a stage, share them with the world.
Many artists were able to blossom their careers here in New York; we have met and formed
relationships with countless people over the years, and through them, have been able to
spread beautiful art all over the world.
For this I am very thankful.
Over these past five years, we, like others, have been influenced by the constant changing
of the world's politics, economy, and forces of nature (Hurricane Sandy being a recent example of this).
It is in contrast to these aspects of life, that we can take a moment to truly appreciate the power that
a beautiful object has.
I have witnessed how this power can bring peace to people's hearts.
Although five years have passed since opening, I am now more committed than ever to
our initial goals, and have a powerful vision for implementing these goals.
I have decided to change our business structure in a way that has never been done before.
I am doing this all in order to go directly to the site of where each Japanese artwork is created,
and to find only the most superb pieces to present to the world.
Ippodo's first chapter has finished.
But I anticipate exciting things for Ippodo's next chapter.
For all of your support - past, present, and future - I am deeply grateful.
Thank you very much.

Despite SOFA CHICAGO (Sculpture Objects Functional Art + Design 11/1-4, 2012)
occurring shortly after Hurricane Sandy, we were greatly successful!
Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for visiting our booth.
The 15 hour car ride that we took from NY to Chicago just after the Hurricane, is an adventure story in itself, that was reported on by WBEZ, Chicago Public Radio.
Junko Narita's dolls garnered a lot of attention when they are introduced to the public.
Many of each artist's pieces found new homes.
Artists Exhibited:
Koji Hatakeyama / Yukiya Izumita / Ryoji Koie / Tohru Matsuzaki / Yui Tsujimura / Midori Tsukada / Takashi Tomo-oka / Junko Narita / Shinya Yamamura

It will take time to fully revive our New York gallery in Chelsea, but if you would like to make a visit at any point, please contact us beforehand.

Takashi Tomo-oka is featured by ELLE DECOR "ART SHOW" (June issue)!
From February 2 through March 10, 2012, Ippodo Gallery New York proudly hosted a photography exhibition titled, "Painting Flowers Through Photography", by up-and-coming photographer, Takashi Tomo-oka. The exhibition proved to be wildly successful. Tomo-oka's photographs of flowers and other plants, which have been printed on washi paper, evoke a fusion of the traditional and the contemporary. They have left quite an impact on fans of photography, the gallery goers of Chelsea, fine art enthusiasts, those affiliated with art museums, and many others. All in all, we noticed great reception to Tomo-oka's photography exhibition.
Among the positive reception that Tomo-oka's work garnered, praise came in the form of a feature in the June issue of ELLE DECOR magazine (http://www.elledecor.com/) within the "ART SHOW" section. The basis of the feature is a thorough interview that was conducted at Ippodo Gallery New York during the time that Tomo-oka was having his solo exhibition. Within the 2-page spread about Tomo-oka, one can find details about the artist's technique in capturing the painting-like images of his floral subjects, as well as his own thoughts about his work. We encourage you to take a look at this insightful feature on Tomo-oka.

Atsuya Tominaga's artist talk on May 5 was a huge success!
Many people listened in earnest as Mr. Tominaga, with an artist's passion, spoke of the spirit behind sculpting stone.
And during the sculpting demonstration, people were able to listen to the primitive, but beautifully raw sound of chisel and hammer hitting stone.
A video of this event will be posted soon, so please stay tuned!
