Although the bulk of the collection contains functional drink-ware by Kodai Ujiie, this Celadon and Lacquer vase provides an example of the types of larger forms the artist creates. Not shying away from expression or the use of texture, the artist constructs a very visually striking form. Seemingly simple, the work represents a contemporary consideration of porcelain as a material. Usually buttery, soft, and refined, Kodai Ujiie exhibits the other side of porcelain, the stretch and pull - the organic and rough qualities of clay.
