An amorphous undulating shape drifts across the wavy surface of this lacquered tray. Created from repeated applications of lacquer, the tray shimmers brilliantly as the scarlet red vermillion and silver pigments reflect light. Notice the uneven surfaces revealing themselves under the painted lacquer, reminiscent of the hand carved wood of the tray. The silver pigment accentuates the natural wood textures beneath the lacquer. Evoking themes of interconnectedness, Matsuzaki’s delicately sculpted piece could be used to serve guests during intimate gatherings.
