This squat, cylindrical water jar is used to hold fresh water during a tea ceremony. After forming the body on a potter’s wheel, Tsujimura hand formed its matching lid with a hollow, spherical knob. The red clay with thick white glaze of this piece is typical of the aka-shino, or “red shino,” style first popularized in the late sixteenth century. As the vessel cooled, the glaze crackled in an irregular pattern reminiscent of broken ice.
