Matsuzaki carved broad, angular panels around the walls of this bowl to complicate its otherwise rounded form. The thick layer of black lacquer through the bowl’s interior and exterior is interrupted by a striking band of silver-white lacquer around the bowl’s hip. The irregular, textured application of this band further contrasts with the smooth texture of the black lacquer. The deep black of the bowl’s interior is designed to set off whatever is placed inside it, such as brightly colored fruit or confections.
