This rounded shape of this jar, made by Kan Kishino, Sho's brother, suggests the type of ceramic vessel commonly used to store tea leaves. Kan formed the body of the jar on a potter’s wheel, and then trimmed it to give the sides their irregular contours. The jar was glazed using a technique known as yakishime: as wood burns in the kiln alongside the pot, the falling ash forms a natural glaze on the rim and body of the jar. This type of glaze requires the artist to cede control of the final appearance of the piece. Here, glaze pooled and dripped dramatically down the jar’s front, creating a distinct focal point.
