Kodai Ujiie’s Ofukei and Lacquer tea bowl illustrates cobalt in the celadon glaze application portions. A thick layer of celadon moves alongside the face of the form, dragging the highly pigmented cobalt oxide with it, creating this soft, watercolor-like finish. The rest of the tea bowl exhibits the same qualities of lacquer inlay and the artist’s attention to organic and rough form.
