Shiro Tsujimura’s Oribe Tea Bowl series are refreshing pieces of contemporary traditional Japanese ceramics. The Black Oribe Tea Bowl was thrown on the wheel and its curvature from the artist’s hand, pushing the clay inwards and outwards to create a subtle indentation and rippling effect. The small foot of the tea bowl, along with the full belly, gives the form a sense of breath, like it is deflating.
The black glaze pools and flows throughout the form and produces beautiful differences in thickness and consistency. The piece speaks to the nature of Wabi Sabi and simplicity elevated through letting the work breathe on its own.
