The irregular, ovular form of this tea bowl is irreverently known as kutsugata, or “shoe shaped.” Along with this shape, the striking amorphous design in deep green is typical of Oribe-style wares, named for the tea master Furuta Oribe (1544–1615). On the base, Tsujimura carved “DEVON” with rough, shallow strokes, indicating that this piece was made during a visit to Devon, England in 1993.
