Yohen Ash Water JarCeramicH7 1/4 x W7 3/4, H18 x W20 cmC18544APPOAMatsuzaki used a mold to form the ridges of this water jar used to hold fresh water during a tea ceremony. The title, Yohen, is a term that references the natural changes that happen to ceramics when they are fired. Matsuzaki’s sandy, iron-rich clay oxidized into a deep, rusty red. In the kiln, wood ash fell on the initially unglazed surface of the water jar, turning into a thin layer of naturally occurring glaze in varying shades of red, yellow, and brown.
