Using chisels and planes on blocks of wood, Tohru Matsuzaki has crafted a simple yet interesting lid rest. Starting by hand carving the wood, followed by layers of black urushi lacquer and red vermillion, the black lacquer peering through the lively red brings attention to the markings naturally created by the piece’s sculpted form. The outward curve at the top of the lid rest is reminiscent of the beginnings of a blooming flower.
