• Biography

Kazuhito Takadoi (b. 1972) is a fiber artist whose practice is rooted in his training as a horticulturist. Born in Nagoya, Japan, Takadoi studied at the Hokkaido Agricultural and Horticultural College in Sapporo, Japan. He then continued his schooling in England at the Royal Horticultural Society, Wisley, before spending a year in the United States at Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania. In 1999, he returned to the U.K., working in a private garden, and enrolled at Leeds Beckett University. In 2003, he graduated from Leeds Beckett with an honors bachelors in Art and Garden Design.

Inspired by the woodland surrounding his childhood home outside of Nagoya, Takadoi cultivates grasses, leaves, and twigs in his garden. Working with these organic materials, Takadoi creates woven, stitched, and tied compositions that emphasize the natural colors and textures of the plants. As the materials age, the colors of his sculptures change subtly, marking the seasonal passage of time. Shadows also deeply inform his practice: as light shifts or the viewer changes their perspective, the shadows of the delicate twigs and grass create fleeting, distinctive impressions, continually transforming the work.
