Aspen Art Fair 2026
29 Jul - 1 Aug 2026 Ippodo Gallery returns to the Aspen Art Fair at the historic Hotel Jerome for the second year; the presentation Transforming Nature draws the splendor of the organic world into the realm of the decorated interior. Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains, the raw essences of nature convene within the home-style setting in the form of Carrara marble, regional clays of Japan, forged iron, Venetian blown glass, carved & lacquered wood, washi paper, bamboo, traditionally dyed textiles, and precious mineral pigment paints. The ensemble of works by more than twenty artists, primarily hailing from Japan, invites new considerations about the relationship between people and the earth: a living medium capable of profound beauty and metamorphosis. Through a diverse range of textures and forms—from the delicate, metal-worked petals of silver violas and golden ginkgoes by Shota Suzuki to the subconsciously moving white marble sculptures of Kan Yasuda —the featured artists capture the ephemeral cycles of growth, decay, and rebirth. Each piece serves as a bridge between the physical and spiritual. Light, form, and human touch can elevate organic matter into the iconic. Transforming Nature is an invitation to witness the alchemy of the natural world as it is distilled through Japanese craft traditions. Read more -
Fine Arts Paris 2026
19 - 23 Sep 2026 In the nineteenth century, Japonisme fundamentally transfixed the landscape of Western art, reshaping French culture through a revolutionary introduction of flat perspectives, vivid naturalism, and asymmetric compositions. Today, in the twenty-first century, this dialogue undergoes a profound, silent evolution. Japan’s contemporary masters continue to honor the rigorous lineage of their respective heritages, yet they confront their materials with a radical modern sensitivity, sublimating ancient craft into the realm of pure contemporary art. This exhibition, Quiet Metamorphosis: A Resurgence of Kogei, marks a historic revival of Japanese craft. Under the majestic dome of the Grand Palais—the very site where historic World’s Fairs ignited the global passion for Japanese aesthetics—Ippodo Gallery returns to awaken an essential philosophy of beauty. We present art that speaks directly to the five senses, honors our immutable connection to the natural world, and ultimately restores a sense of grounded humanity to modern life. Spanning an extraordinary breadth of disciplines—Nihonga painting, structural textile dyeing, Urushi lacquer, sculpture, ceramics, bamboo, metalwork, and wood—these works defy simple categorization. They evoke a deeply visceral, meditative physical presence. This is the quiet metamorphosis of our time: tradition unbound, reawakened as the absolute contemporary vanguard. Painting (絵画): Perfectly represented by Masaaki Miyasako and Daisuke Nakano, who utilize crushed natural mineral pigments and antique ink on washi paper or canvas. Textiles/Dyeing (染色): Beautifully represented by Shigeki Fukumoto’s masterful rōzome (wax-resist) and structural nuno-zōgan (cloth inlay) techniques on Turfan cotton, alongside Shihoko Fukumoto's intricate indigo textile work. Lacquer (漆): Anchored by the exquisite urushi lacquerware of Jihei Murase on zelkova wood, as well as Kodai Ujiie’s innovative lacquer-on-porcelain tea bowls. Sculpture & Woodwork (彫刻・木工): Evidenced by Sho Kishino’s 2026 Arhat and spiritual figures carved from driftwood, stone, and ancient wood reclaimed from Kyoto Zen temples, alongside Kenta Hirai's dynamic woodwork. Ceramics (陶芸): Spanning Kunimasa Aoki’s raw terracotta sculptures, Takeshi Imaizumi’s precise porcelain glazes, and Mitsukuni Misaki's vibrant blue glazed vessels. Bamboo (竹): Represented by the elegant, fluid architectural curves of Hideaki Honma and Hafu Matsumoto's woven bamboo forms. Metalwork (金工): Captured in Shota Suzuki’s incredibly intricate botanical metal sculptures, such as The Tiny Piece of Autumn Ginkgo. Paper/Wire: KAKU's stunning abstract panels made of wire and washi paper beautifully bridge sculpture and paper craft. Read more

TEFAF Maastricht 2026
14 - 19 Mar 2026 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Authentic Colors of Japan MAASTRICHT, NETHERLANDS – Ippodo Gallery is pleased to announce its debut participation in TEFAF Maastricht 2026, presenting a landmark exhibition titled Authentic Colors of Japan at Booth 476. From March 14 to March 19, the exhibition will feature masterful objects by 20 of Japan’s most distinguished contemporary artists. Their creations evoke vivid pigments sourced from nature and explore the primal power of color through the nation’s rarest traditional materials. This showcase of authentic Japanese colors offers visitors an encounter with a spectrum of mediums: the deep reds of vermillion lacquer, the luminescence of Gofun white from oyster shells, the brilliance of gold and silver leaf, and the depth of indigo blue. The exhibition highlights how ancient techniques are being radically recontextualized for global contemporary audiences: cutting edge mother-of-pearl inlays are naturally luminescent like digital screens; revolutionary silk Obi belts woven with opal incorporate the thousand-year history of Japanese weaving with new understanding of minerals; and masterworks in bamboo, Nihonga painting, and clay are grounded in the earthy, tactile aesthetics of the Japanese landscape. "To witness these artworks is to see the 'colors' of Japan not as mere pigments, but as living history," says Shoko Aono, the director of Ippodo Gallery. "In presenting pieces by these 20 esteemed artists in Maastricht, we are showcasing a mastery that is at once ancient and avant-garde." Exhibiting artists: Shin Fujihira, Shihoko Fukumoto, Kondaya Genbey, Yuki Hayama, Hideaki Honma, Terumasa Ikeda, Manji Inoue, Hajime and Yasuo Ishikura, Hiromi Itabashi, Yukiya Izumita, KAKU, Sho Kishino, Hirotomi Maeda, Masaaki Miyasako, Jihei Murase, Daisuke Nakano, Junko Narita, Reiji Omori, Hiraku Sudo, Shion Tabata, and Sōyō and Shōdo Yamagishi. San Francisco FOG Design + Art 2026
21 - 25 Jan 2026 Ippodo Gallery presents Shaped by Nature for its debut at San Francasico FOG Art + Design, a curated selection of works by leading contemporary Japanese artists exploring the potential of nature channeled by human hands. Rooted in centuries of craft and the symbols of Japan, these artworks reveal how materials drawn from the earth are shaped through personal inspiration and time-honored mastery. Shaped by Nature synthesizes the Japanese garden—water, stone, trees, and moss existing in quiet balance—where humans and nature are deeply entwined. The rhythm of the seasons, reverence for the gifts of the earth, and attention to subtle changes carry visibly through each artwork. This debut exhibition invites engagement of the five senses with kōgei (fine art craft) and offers craft as a living practice interpreted by each artist as the harmony between nature and humanity. Twenty-three artists are freatured in the exhibition, including Noriyuki Furutani, Tomoyuki Hoshino, Agnes Husz, Terumasa Ikeda, Takeshi Imaizumi, Hajime & Yasuo Ishikura, Hiromi Itabashi, Yukiya Izumita, KAKU, Sho Kishino, Hirotomi Maeda, Masahiro Maeda, Ryoji Koie, Ken Matsubara, Mitsukuni Misaki, Jihei Murase, Tsuneo Nakazawa, Shota Suzuki, Kai Tsujimura, Midori Tsukada, Kodai Ujiie, Soyo & Shodo Yamagishi, and Kan Yasuda.
