Matsubara used shades of deep blue, reminiscent of International Klein Blue developed by the French artist Yves Klein (1928–1962). Sharp lines and circles seem to protrude from the surface, giving the painting an industrial or mechanical quality, like panels of steel riveted together. These panels are overlaid with irregular plains of blue, sectioned off with jagged, almost organic borders. The contrasting shapes and plains seem to shift as one gazes at the painting calling to mind the title, Tamayura, or “fleeting moment.”
