Mitsukuni Misaki’s Water-Blue Glazed Vessel is built by hand, coiled, scored, and rolled with a braided cord to create an active surface texture that references the prehistoric Jomon ceramics of ancient Japan. The vivid blue is realized by applying four layers of pigmented slip glaze—pale & light blues, white, then blue again—before firing. The creating variations in color feign a slow weathering over time. His color palette, however, is inspired from the modern era: the soft hues and gradients of Mark Rothko’s colorfield paintings inspire Misaki’s approach to glaze. Within the vessel as a final layer of iron treatment, allowing water and flowers to enliven the ceramic.
