Yukiya Izumita’s Sekisoh, Layered Fissure evokes the appearance of stratified rock formations, its layers echoing the passage of time recorded within sedimentary rock. Sekisoh is created from salt-rich clay that Izumita collects himself from the Tohoku seaside where he resides; he then layers the clay onto paper and lets it dry, leaving it with a distinctive coarse texture. After drying the clay, he stacks each layer one by one. The finished piece transforms the clay to look as if the layers are floating, capturing the tension between the rigidity and fluidity of the medium.
