In Purple Magnolia “Awakening of Spring”, Nihonga painter Daisuke Nakano captures a lone blue bird, suspended in the branches of a budding magnolia tree. On closer look, a butterfly drifts across the lower right corner against a background of silver leaf, as if about to land among the fragrant blossoms. In Kyoto, where Nakano is based, purple magnolias are among the earliest flowers to bloom, signaling the transition from winter to spring. Awakening of Spring elegantly evokes the feeling of viewing the first buds of the magnolia, marking the end of the harsh winter.
