SHIJIN-SÔÔ is inspired by ancient wall paintings discovered in a tomb in Nara Prefecture, Japan. These paintings depict the four directional gods from Taoist tradition, each representing a different direction and element. Fukumoto reimagines these traditional symbols using a modern style, applying his wax resist and soak dyeing techniques to create bold, colorful vertical lines to evoke Byakko, the white tiger associated with the west.
