In this ink-on-washi painting by Tadataka Kishino, Sho’s father, dark figures seem to slowly approach an ethereal Pagoda, a temple structure for housing Buddhist relics. The texture of the washi, Japanese handmade paper, is visible through the sheer washes of ink, imbuing the painting with a vaporous quality, as if the scene might slowly fade away.
