Rippling waves recede into a foggy horizon, blurring water and sky. The painting’s misty quality complicates the sense of depth: the viewer might be gazing across a vast waterscape, or perhaps straining to see a short distance ahead through a thick veil of fog. Shadows in the background suggest the possibility of places hidden from sight. Matsbara uses impasto to create horizontal furrows and small braille-like dots across the painting.
