The Sound series began in 1981, when Matsubara visited his brother's temple in Imajo, Fukui prefecture, and began working with the circle motif, marveling at its cyclical perfection. More than a decade later, Matsubara went back to his hometown of Toyama and lived on the remote island of Bamba. For a month, he lived in the wilderness and was deeply rooted in the nature surrounding him. Gazing under the millions of years of illumination, Matsubara became one with the stars; almost floating into the universe, his consciousness understood that sound and the stars are one. This awakening leads him to begin his journey with abstract paintings.
