B21414Courtesy of Ippodo GalleryKishino’s slightly carved bird looks out from a gnarled, natural wooden perch. The textured wood grain on the bird’s breast mimics ruffled feathers and contrasts with the bird’s smooth, folded wings. The sculpture’s polished surface and dark coloring come from a thin coating of lacquer mixed with iron powder. Copper powder is added to the lacquer glaze, which gives the figure a reflective, iridescent quality.Exhibitions
