KAKU’S "Untitled" S30-K consists of thousands of pure white washi paper spirals, coiled by hand around shaped wire. Washi, a traditional Japanese paper made from the inner bark fibers of the kozo, mitsumata, and gampi plants, has played an integral role in Japanese culture for over one thousand years, and appears both in traditional crafts and daily life, from calligraphy to sliding screen doors. KAKU uses the paper medium to create a textured natural landscape—calling to mind a sea of shells or flower petals—that meditates on the beauty and importance of washi in everyday life.
