Shihoko Fukumoto’s Galaxy seems to glow from within, capturing a deep indigo sky suspended with stars. Fukumoto has spent over fifty years mastering aizome, the traditional Japanese art of indigo dyeing using the indigenous ai plant–which Fukumoto defines as “Japan blue.” Drawing on early Japanese folk traditions of shibori resist dyeing and indigo techniques, Fukumoto transforms these methods into innovative contemporary textiles. Galaxy is a striking example of Fukumoto’s exceptional control in the dyeing process, with a radiant circle emerging from an indigo grid dotted with soft white forms that recall a constellation of stars. The work is a testament to her masterful ability to preserve areas of pure white amid the rich blue.
