Adrift deep beneath the water, Someya imbues the figure with the negative emotions that bubble to the surface as a contemporary woman in Japanese society. During the pandemic, she spent much time isolated in her studio parsing these feelings. The kimono is devoid of color, calling into question whether the wearer really exists at all. Diving deep into the source of her happiness, Someya realized, through the creative process, the wonder of interpersonal relationships and the trivial talk that may otherwise go disregarded. Goldfish may speak to the short-mindedness with which people conduct themselves in modern society as attention is divided ever further, but they have positive connotations, too, as symbols of good fortune.
