Suikei Saito is one of the few prominent women calligraphy artists in Japan, known for her elegant and defiant brush strokes. Here, she has confidently written the character Kai, meaning "to return," "to revolve," or "to circle". As a calligraphic motif, Kai represents the idea of a cycle: the cyclical nature of life, the search for spiritual wholeness, the return to one's origins.
