Jihei Murase's process is meticulous; using hand-forged wrought iron tools he shapes fine grain Japanese elm into two perfect halves, preserving the original texture of the wood. Murase's hatchet-shaving technique adds variable to the surface of the tea caddy, which he finishes with layers of red and clear lacquer.
