Part of the ‘sun’ series blown during de Santillana’s creative residency at the Tacoma Museum of Glass, the atypical, yet minimalist, standing-oval form evokes a solar orb and the symbolic Indian lingam. The ancient South Asian iconographic form bears three repetitions of smooth glass additions, characteristic of the deity’s eye or enlightenment; referred traditionally as opening of a ‘third eye.’ The semi-transparent surface treatment of frit powders is only partially melted into the glass itself, like a veiled impression of a world hidden within, visible only through the three viewing points.
