The radiant iridescence achieved at the Tacoma Museum of Glass articulates de Santillana’s explorative attention to the dichotomous relationships inherent to the medium of glass: transparent or opaque, reflective or matte, textured or smooth. The interior glass layer is mirrored in golden hues, smooth and uninterrupted, reflecting all light in true opacity. The exterior layer, wrapped in a coat of glowing white powders tinged blue, is produced from metal powders that yield semi-transparent, matte, and textured that are intensified in juxtaposition to mirrored gold.
