Although primarily a potter, Shiro Tsjimura extends his artistic scope through painting. Untitled, 2018 is a deeply textured painting that contains subtle yet striking movement. The treatment of the thick material is similar to his treatment of clay and glaze. The layering and overlapping in an attempt to create interesting composition in turn reflects a common saying among potters: “The surface of a pot is a landscape, when you paint the surface, imagine a canvas.” Shiro shows us here, with glowing red light blanketed underneath a sheet of black, that his visual language can easily translate from a form to a flat surface.
