De Santillana’s tall bamboo exemplifies her capacity to develop colored glass works at a large scale without the same risks taken in glass development on the island of Murano from which she hailed. Lifelong experience with the fickle nature of colored glass meant the artist knew well the perils of applying even color in such a large format. The combined expertise of Czech engineers and de Santillana’s rigorous experiments yielded a lively green that conceals purple within—all realized by pairing dark blue pigment with uranium green-yellow. The deep green of the piece is accented by the supple structural folds. Light transforms the folded curvature of the lip, illuminating the hand-shaved line that defines the silhouette of the slumped glass.
