Ryuji Taira's palladium platinum print is acquired by the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, NY, for permenant collection. Flowers & Seeds depicts Ryuji Taira's timeless subjects of plantlife in a state of decay and rebirth.
Taira's works first showed at Ippodo Gallery New York during Panta Rhei: Everything Flows in Spring 2023, before joining the gallery's presentation as one of three premier photographers for the AIPAD 2024 Photograph Show at the Park Avenue Armory.
Ryuji Taira’s images converge in a thousand tiny details emphasized by the thread-like quality of washi paper. Taira’s motifs—environmental microcosms—are brought to life by the nineteenth century style platinum printing technique imposed on gampi-washi. Taira translates dandelions and living creatures, using a large-format camera and silver halide film, into immortal images. Taira’s gampi-washi medium, which he prepares with lacquer over ten years, allows him to simultaneously preserve the natural essence of the symbolism and the transience of nature, defying decay.
