Until now, I have focused my practice on questioning the nature of decoration in craftsmanship, primarily through tea ceremony utensils and lidded vessels. However, with the cooperation of everyone at Ippodo, I was given the opportunity to create a massive object liberated from any specific function. This work was born out of a dialogue with the Western concept and context of “fine art.” The production period spanned one year and eight months, and it was a major challenge both for me personally and for my workshop. I feel that having such an endeavor evaluated from a “different perspective” and becoming part of a collection that will be passed down to the future marks a turning point in my artistic career.
At the same time, this achievement was made possible only through the support of everyone in Japan who has stood by me throughout my career. I offer my deepest gratitude.
Taking this experience as a starting point, I will strive to connect the techniques and aesthetic sensibilities cultivated in Japan to a broader global audience and convey their value. I would be honored if you would continue to follow our work.
