Biography
Because the heart is like a string, it becomes tangled, unravels, and is tieda new. The Heian aristocracy used their brushes to weave together the myriad layers of their hearts, spinning them into words—but was it no the colors of flowers that most deeply colored those hearts? I imagined that these flowers bloomed as if embroidered by threads of rain, and so I composed this waka.
Satoshi Nemoto is a Doctor of Calligraphy and a specially appointed lecturer in the Faculty of Letters at Rissho University.
In 2024, he created the title calligraphy and provided calligraphy instruction for the NHK Taiga drama "Hikaru Kimi e" (To You, My Shining Self). His creative activities are diverse, including providing artwork for the watch brand "Grand Seiko" (2018) and holding a solo exhibition in New York (2019). In the free web series "Hitouta no Chaseki" (2020-), he explains the philosophy of waka poetry connected to the tea ceremony and create related works. His recent works also include "Introduction to Heian Kana Calligraphy: How to View and Learn from Ancient Calligraphy" (2023, Yuzankaku) and "The Elegance of Calligraphy: The Aesthetics of Modern Artists" (2021, Shun'yodo Shoten).
