Because the heart is like a string, it becomes tangled, unravels, and is tieda new. The Heian aristocracy used their brushes to weave together the myriad layers of their hearts, spinning them into words—but was it no the colors of flowers that most deeply colored those hearts? I imagined that these flowers bloomed as if embroidered by threads of rain, and so I composed this waka.

Satoshi Nemoto is a renowned celebrated for his scholarly yet modern approach to traditional Japanese scripts. Influenced by his grandmother at a young age, he fell in love with calligraphy and kana. He received his PhD in Calligraphy Studies and a specially appointed lecturer in the Faculty of Letters at Rissho University, he specializes in Heian-period writing traditions, and Kuzushiji. Nemoto uses these techniques to pursue a new era of modern elegance that can be obtained no matter the social status. Now appearing in different NHK programming and other media outlets, he has rose to fame while never searching for fame at all; he simply loves pursuing kana. "I’m truly glad I never thought, 'I want to make money off kana' or 'I want to become famous.' It’s about finding something you don’t actively seek out–hoping that someday someone will reach out to you, but knowing you’ll have no regrets even if they don’t. I think that’s what’s truly important." What's important to Nemoto is composing and teaching a new generation of Calligraphers.

In 2024, he created the title calligraphy and provided calligraphy instruction for the NHK Taiga drama "Hikaru Kimi e" (To You, My Shining Self). His creative activities are diverse, including providing artwork for the watch brand "Grand Seiko" (2018) and holding a solo exhibition in New York (2019). In the free web series "Hitouta no Chaseki" (2020-), he explains the philosophy of waka poetry connected to the tea ceremony and create related works. His recent works also include "Introduction to Heian Kana Calligraphy: How to View and Learn from Ancient Calligraphy" (2023, Yuzankaku) and "The Elegance of Calligraphy: The Aesthetics of Modern Artists" (2021, Shun'yodo Shoten).
