Tsujimura constructed this pot from 4-inch segments of clay, each day adding a new piece to slowly build its coiled form of the pot over several weeks. In choosing this technique, Tsujimura drew inspiration from Japanese Sue wares, a style of unglazed or ash-glazed stoneware produced during the fifth through tenth centuries. Sue wares were typically coiled by hand using lengths of clay, and then patted or polished smooth. On Tsujimura’s vessel, natural ash-glaze pools down the side of the vessel to create a pattern of clustered, green-grey lines, which evoke an ink-wash painting of a bamboo forest swathed in fog.
