“With each individual work, including the title, I condense a single universe into that piece. The motifs are mostly inspired by nature, and I find it most satisfying when someone is able to look at my work and experience a soft breeze, hear the voice of a bird, or recreate a feeling from some story.”
-Ruri Takeuchi
Girl’s Day is the Japanese celebration held annually on March 3rd to pray for the healthy growth of girls. In ancient societies, men went out to hunt while women made textiles and earthenware, thus continuing the essential link between women and craftsmanship into modern day.
Women remain synonymous with craftsmanship thanks to what is considered an adaptive attitude to the environment around them, strong rooting in Mother Earth, and enjoyment of natural materials with love and dedication.
To honor this national holiday, the female-led Ippodo Gallery has selected women's works from our collection. Please take a look at the devotional works that are born from a compassionate heart and an intrinsic desire to nurture new life.
