Susumu Shingu’s Astral Forest looks like an extraterrestrial landscape, its metal trees swaying gently in the wind. The work evokes a living forest, animated by forces outside of human control. Shingu’s kinetic sculptures work to showcase the power of the earth’s natural forces–wind, water, light, gravity–serving as a reminder that the environment is ever changing. Drawing on his engineering expertise, Shingu closely studies the mechanics of insects and natural phenomena, translating their movements into his sculptures.
